3.4.11 - Academic Program Coordination

For each major in a degree program, the institution assigns responsibility for program coordination, as well as for curriculum development and review, to persons academically qualified in the field. In those degree programs for which the institution does not identify a major, this requirement applies to a curricular area or concentration.

Judgment of Compliance

The College certifies compliance.

Narrative

The Academic Programs Unit at Cleveland Community College has three separate divisions. Each division is directed by a dean with instructional experience in their assigned content area: Arts and Sciences; Business and Allied Health; and, Advanced Manufacturing and Public Services. There are several departments within each division, and within every department there is a designated department chair. Department chairs are full-time faculty members in one of the curriculum specific areas within the division. Also, there are discipline coordinators who are overseen by department chairs within each divisional unit. The discipline coordinators are full-time faculty members who teach within a specified discipline in a department. All deans, department chairs and discipline coordinators are qualified in their fields. This administrative structure of the Academic Programs Unit at CCC provides full-time faculty with the opportunity to actively participate in curriculum development and review.

The department chair has several responsibilities associated with program coordination, curriculum development and review. Specifically, the department chair is responsible for the following:

  1. Lead the program review process for the department with assistance from discipline coordinators and faculty, as well as make recommendations for program improvement, need, expansion or possible discontinuation as deemed necessary.
  2. Participate in and make recommendations for curriculum revision to the dean.
  3. Assure that programs and courses are up to date, including the most current technology methods available, and in compliance with state and national accreditation standards, specifically ADA compliance.

Each discipline coordinator has the following responsibilities for program coordination:

  1. Coordinate programs in catalog and ensure that North Carolina Community College System and local requirements (i.e. prerequisites and co-requisites) are met, while working to assure ADA compliance standards are achieved as well.
  2. Assist with developing a course schedule and suggested course sequence.
  3. Present program outcomes and descriptions in advisory committee meetings. Elicit and apply employer input and feedback concerning program goals, student outcomes and student job performance as required.
  4. Present program changes to curriculum committee for approval as assigned.

Department Chairs and Discipline Coordinators are selected based on their interest in serving in the position and their qualifications. A list of full-time faculty is given in the College’s Academic Bulletin and Student Handbook. The list includes academic credentials (degrees earned), the discipline they teach and whether they serve as department chair or discipline coordinators.

Department Chairs and Discipline Coordinators also play a crucial role in the periodic review of programs offered by the College. A four-year cycle of program review requires chairs and coordinators to take the lead role in their program/discipline program review under the guidance of the Dean of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness.

The need for curricular changes, unless mandated by the State, is determined by the faculty in each of the College’s respective programs. The approval process starts with faculty. Faculty submit a proposal form and then present the proposal to the Curriculum Committee. Items approved by the Curriculum Committee, as evidenced by meeting minutes, are then approved by Administrative Council. Requests for new programs are presented to the Board of Trustees for approval. Once approved by the Board, a new program application is sent to the NCCCS for State Board of Community Colleges approval and a prospectus is submitted to SACSCOC for approval before implementation.

Cleveland Community College employs numerous Department Chairs and Discipline Coordinators. The following table lists these individuals, which includes their area of responsibility and their qualifications for coordinating their respective program/discipline.
