The MLT* Program at Cleveland Community College prepares students to work in medical laboratories, performing clinical testing in chemistry, hematology, immunohematology (blood bank), microbiology, urinalysis, and molecular diagnostics. As part of the healthcare team, graduates help support health maintenance, disease diagnosis, and patient treatment.
It is estimated that 70 percent of all healthcare decisions affecting diagnosis or treatment involve laboratory testing.

Program Structure:
The first year of the Medical Laboratory Technology program is completed on the Cleveland Community College campus. The second year primarily takes place in modern medical laboratories, where students receive hands-on training precepted by medical laboratory professionals. Instruction includes experience with professional-grade instrumentation, supported by qualified faculty.
High-demand career field:
Employment projections from O*NET OnLine indicate that the State of North Carolina will see a 15% increase in employment for medical laboratory technologists and technicians between 2022 and 2032. This growth is expected to generate approximately 1,050 job openings each year across the state, supporting strong employment opportunities and competitive salaries for program graduates.
