Students work for academic credit

Work-based learning gives students the opportunity to use what they learn in the classroom on the job, while earning academic credit. Depending upon the employer, a student may or may not receive pay for working. More important than the pay is the opportunity to earn a positive reference for a résumé. Paid or unpaid, students will be expected to go to work every day as scheduled, dress appropriately, and show their ability to get along with clients, co-workers, and supervisors.
WBL is dependent upon the cooperation of employers and educators working with students to create realistic transitions from college to the workplace.
WBL Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible, the student must meet the following criteria:
- Receive approval from the discipline coordinator overseeing the student’s program of study.
- Receive approval from the cooperating employer.
- Have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 in prior classes taken within the program of study at Cleveland Community College.
- Have earned a minimum of 9 credit hours in the appropriate program of study (with a minimum of 3 credit hours from the core within the major), unless otherwise approved by the program coordinator.
- Meet the eligibility requirements for WBL as set by the student’s program of study.
- Submit a completed WBL Application to the WBL Coordinator.
Students already employed in their field of study may be able to earn credit through their employer, provided they meet the WBL eligibility requirements.
WBL can start any time during the semester, but the required hours must be met by the end of the semester.
Students are expected to adhere to all policies and procedures of CCC and the employer. Failure to do so may result in being withdrawn from the WBL course and assignment and/or earning a failing grade.
How Do I Get Started?
See your program discipline coordinator to discuss eligibility, placement options, and to complete the application. Schedule an appointment with the WBL Coordinator to submit the completed application and register.
