TRIO Student Support Services

What is TRIO-SSS?

The TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded outreach program designed to motivate and connect first-generation college students, students from low-income backgrounds, and/or students with disabilities to the resources they may need to succeed in their academic careers.

Eligibility

You are eligible for TRIO-Student Support Services if one of the following is true:

  • you are a first-generation college student
  • you have financial need
  • you have a documented disability

First-Generation Student

Being a first-gen student means that your parent(s) did not complete a 4-year college or university degree, regardless of other family member’s level of education.

Financial Need

Financial need means that your income or your family’s income falls below the income figure determined by the federal government, based on family size.

Disability

A documented disability is a physical, learning or psychological disability that has been verified by a licensed medical doctor.

Services

As a participant in the TRIO-SSS program, you will have opportunities to participate in both on-campus and off-campus cultural enrichment activities, which will enhance your college experience. These activities will be free for all TRIO-SSS students.

Academic Services

  • Tutoring
  • One-on-one academic advising and educational planning
  • Free workshops and seminars on study skills and organization
  • Mentoring opportunities to help you set personal and academic goals. We may also be able to arrange visits to colleges and universities you would like to attend.

Counseling and Financial Aid Services

  • Personal assistance with applications to four-year universities and financial aid applications.
  • We will help you explore both public and private scholarships.
  • We also provide personal, career, and academic counseling to help you meet your personal and academic goals.

FAQ

Any CCC student who is from a low-income household or has a parent and/or guardian who does not have a four-year degree can apply. Anyone with a documented disability can apply as well. You do not have to be involved with a specific program of study to be accepted.

Here at TRIO-SSS we are funded to serve 100+ students who need additional assistance with planning for their future. We serve students from all walks of life to ensure that their economic background does not stop them from achieving their academic potential.

You can apply online by clicking the GREEN “apply” button at the top of this page. You will need to enter information such as your phone number, CCC email address, and household income. After you apply, we will review your application and contact you at your CCC email address. Once you have been accepted, you will receive a welcome email from our office. You will also be assigned a TRIO-SSS advisor. If you have any additional questions about filling out your application, please contact us at 704-669-4178 or stop by our office in the Global Studies Room inside the Rose Library.

To remain a student in the TRIO-SSS program, you must:

  • Attend at least two meetings per semester with your assigned advisor.
  • Keep assigned advisor informed of your progress via personal contact throughout the semester. Appointments are highly encouraged.
  • Contact your assigned advisor to explore your options and to do a financial aid verification before withdrawing from a course.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to graduate and/or transfer by enrolling in courses that are required or recommended for your program of study.
  • Maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative (overall) grade point average (GPA)
  • Participate in at least one TRIO-SSS activity per semester. Some activities include, but are not limited to: workshops, tutoring, college tours, cultural events, and other TRIO-SSS or CCC sponsored activities.

On a regular basis as a TRIO-SSS student, you can expect to attend various college tours, events and workshops with our TRIO advisors.  These will be group activities and trips. There will be an updated calendar of activities and workshops posted each month. To sign up, use the google form found at the top of this page.

You can also schedule meetings with your advisor to discuss your goals and/or recent changes in your life that may impact you academically.
