Cleveland Community College will welcome 18 local high school students to campus on June 8 for the start of its first Summer Electrical Academy, an eight-week program designed to introduce students to high-demand careers in electrical systems technology.

The academy is part of Careers Electric™, a national workforce initiative launched by the Siemens Foundation to expand access to high-quality electrical training and help build the next generation of skilled electrical workers.

North Carolina was selected as the first state for implementation, with the North Carolina Community College System playing a leading role. The initiative is supported by a $9.2 million investment from the Siemens Foundation to help community colleges across the state offer electrical technology training.

CCC’s Summer Electrical Academy will run from June 8 through July 29, 2026, providing the participating high school juniors and seniors with a direct pathway into a high-demand, high-wage career field. Students will receive hands-on training in residential wiring, motors, and controls while earning college credit.

“This is more than a summer program,” said Dr. Bruce Mack, vice president of academic affairs at CCC. “It’s an opportunity for students to explore a career that offers stability, strong earning potential, and meaningful work in our community.”

The 18 students, representing all six high schools in the county, and their families were welcomed during a kick-off event on May 26. The students signed pre-apprenticeship agreements, marking the beginning of their commitment to the program. Upon successful completion of the academy, students will receive college credit for both courses and a pre-apprenticeship certificate.

The academy prepares students for entry-level opportunities in residential electrical construction and electrical maintenance of motors and machinery. Participating students will also receive a $2,000 stipend, and those who need it may receive up to $350 in transportation assistance.

Thanks to the Siemens Foundation’s investment, CCC is helping remove financial barriers that can prevent students from exploring technical careers. The stipend and transportation support allow participants to focus on learning, gaining hands-on experience, and envisioning their future in a field that powers homes, businesses, and communities.
