Academies and Job Training

The Barber Academy teaches the skills necessary to meet the requirements set by the NC Board Of Barber Examiners and become a registered barber.

This academy provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to pass the NC Board of Barber Licensing Exam, thereby equipping them for the professional work force. Each student will be empowered with confidence, professionalism, and enthusiasm to meet the demands of this ever-changing industry. Students will become socially competent members of their community and will have the knowledge and ethics consistent with responsible social and professional behavior. The academy provides an orientation to the skills necessary to become a professional Barber-Stylist for individuals with no prior experience in the hair care industry. 

NC Board of Barber Examiners – Occupational Licensing: The purpose of the Board is to issue a certificate of apprenticeship or registration to those individuals that meet the criteria of the Board. Individuals that meet the criteria of the Board must have completed 1528 classroom hours and passed a written and practical exam and issued an apprentice license. The registered barber must also have completed a 12-month apprenticeship under the supervision of a registered barber and have passed a practical exam. 

Barbering consists of hair cutting, shaving, trimming beards, coloring hair, applying hair tonics, permanent waving, mar celling the hair, facial and scalp massages, treatments with oils, creams, lotions or other preparations, either by hand or mechanical appliances. 

Introduces the concepts, skills, and techniques for volume food production in an institutional setting. Emphasis is placed on development of skills in knife, tool, and equipment handling, and applying principles of food preparation to produce varieties of food products. Additional emphasis is placed on interview skills, résumé writing, job survival skills, and a compilation of basic management skills including purchasing, cost control and menu development. ServSafe Food Handler and CPR Certification is included. 

Advanced class (HOS-307502) offered based on interest after completion of (HOS-307501). 

The Electrical Lineworker Academy prepares students with the knowledge, skills, and certificates that public and private utility companies, electrical utility contractors, telecommunication companies and cellular tower companies across the country require for entry-level jobs. Electrical lineworkers install, repair, and maintain electrical power distribution and transmission systems. Electrical line work is a rewarding career for highly skilled employees who enjoy being outdoors, traveling and working in a team environment where safety is the number one priority. 

The Electrical Lineworker Academy is a 10-week, highly structured and intensive training program designed to prepare students with the skills and credentials that employers want. Students will treat the 10-week Academy like a full-time job and are expected to be ready for training every day at 7:30 a.m. Each week consists of 40 hours of training, Monday – Friday – 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  

Items required prior to being registered for the basic and advanced classes: 

• Must be 18 years of age before the first day of class 
• Attend and successfully complete orientation 
• No felonies within the last 7 years 
• Valid driver’s license 
• Proof of a high school diploma or high school equivalency 
• Weigh less than 275 lbs (for equipment safety purposes) 
• Acquire and provide a copy of a current DOT physical from a physician 
• Have a CDL Class A permit 4 weeks before class starts

The EMT-Basic Academy introduces basic emergency medical care. Topics include preparatory, airway, patient assessment, medical emergencies, trauma, infants and children, and operations. Upon completion students should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve North Carolina State or National Registry EMT Basic certification.

The Heavy Equipment Operator Academy is a two part program. You can enroll in the full-length academy (5 Days for 10 Weeks) or just the equipment operator portion (3 Days for 10 Weeks). 

The full-length Academy includes both Commercial Truck Driver training and Heavy Equipment Operator training. Students attend five days a week from 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. 

The Heavy Equipment Operator only training occurs three days a week from 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. 

The Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) Academy prepares students with the knowledge, skills, and certificates that the State DOT, highway construction companies, bridge construction companies, and private contractors across the country require for entry-level jobs. Heavy equipment operators run heavy machinery, install underground piping, develop land for construction, and repair America’s roadways and bridges. 

HEO Operator careers are for highly skilled employees who enjoy being outdoors and like working in a team environment where safety is the number one priority. Upon successful completion of this 10-week Academy, students will earn an NCCER credential that will prepare them for a career in the heavy machinery field. After passing the DMV exam, given on site, a student can earn a Class A CDL license for their state. 

The Industrial Maintenance Academy course prepares individuals to repair and maintain electrical and mechanical systems and structures. Emphasis is on multi-disciplined systems maintenance, troubleshooting, and problem resolution. Course work includes Introduction to Maintenance Procedures, Electricity, Motors and Controls, Hydraulics and Pneumatics, and Programmable Logistic Computers (PLCs).    

Prepare for the Certified Mission Critical Operator (CMCO) Exam! 

Mission Critical operations allow critical industries to operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Mission Critical Bootcamp prepares you for the Certified Mission Critical Operator exam. In this course, you receive guided training from an instructor with broad knowledge and skills in the MCO industry. Interested in a degree? Students who successfully pass the CMCO exam are eligible to earn college credit for MCO 110 and MCO 115 at CCC. 

The exam can be taken as an online proctored exam from the comfort of your own home, or at any of the 5,000+ Pearson VUE Testing Centers world-wide. Cleveland Community College is an authorized Pearson VUE Testing Center, and your exam can be booked on our campus!

Technical Requirements 

This course will be delivered through the College’s Blackboard Learning Management System. Students will be required to login to the course on a regular basis. The course is compatible on PC, Mac & Chromebook systems. Students should have access to one of these computing devices, as well as Internet access to participate in the course.

The Pharmacy Technician Academy will provide you with the knowledge and preparation to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician. The course will cover: 

• State and Federal drug laws and regulations 
• Pharmaceutical abbreviations 
• Measurements and calculations 

• Reading and interpreting prescriptions 
• Drug classifications and commonly prescribed drugs 
• Community and Hospital Pharmacy Practices 
• Pharmaceutical compounding 
• Medical safety and dispensing 

• National Certificate exam preparation 

Upon completion students are eligible to take the Sterile Compounding course. 

The Truck Driving Training Academy program prepares students to drive tractor trailers, dump trucks, bucket trucks and more. This course teaches students the proper driving skills and safety procedures. To place your name on the interest list, contact Continuing Education:

All students must have a CDL permit and a D.O.T. Physical prior to registering for the course. Students will learn about commercial motor vehicle laws and regulations, and the basic principles and practices for operating commercial vehicles. In this class, students will complete on-line training exercises (3 weeks) and in-person, seated instruction (2-1/2 weeks). In addition, students will complete Behind the Wheel Range & Road driver training exercises. 

Upon successful completion, students will be qualified to take the Commercial Driver’s License exam administered on campus as part of this Academy. Students will then be eligible for employment by commercial trucking firms.
