The Power of Community College Education
From Classroom Assistant to Community Champion
Meet Mike Wall, whose journey from a college graduate to a successful entrepreneur and community leader is more than just a story—it’s an example of determination, community spirit, and the transformative power of education.
Wall’s story begins at Cleveland Community College. Graduating in 2004 and 2007 with three degrees—AAS in Internet Technologies, Computer Programming, and Information Systems—Wall laid the foundation for his future success. “My time as a student at CCC helped prepare me immensely for the work world by giving me the confidence and skills to pursue my passion for website design.”
Upon graduation, Wall’s connection with CCC didn’t end; it evolved. He became a Classroom Assistant, guiding students through Introduction to Computers. His interest in computers and helping people led him to a job at CCC’s Rose Library Help Desk, where he further honed his skills until 2011.
In 2008, Wall expanded his horizons, transferring to Limestone College where he earned two bachelor’s degrees in Internet Management and Information Technology. Armed with knowledge and determination, he embarked on his entrepreneurial journey. In 2018, Designs By Mikey was born—a digital marketing agency that later evolved into Epitome Digital Marketing. “CCC helped prepare me to become a business owner who strives to give back to my community.”
Wall is deeply involved with organizations like the Boys and Girls Clubs of Cleveland County and the Rotary Club of Shelby. Moreover, CCC remains close to his heart. He actively contributed to the College’s revamped website, giving back to the institution that played a pivotal role in shaping his future.
The Power of Education to Transform Lives
But Wall’s vision doesn’t end here. He plans to offer internships to CCC students, allowing them to learn, grow, and prepare for the professional world. His dedication to nurturing young talent mirrors his belief in the power of education to transform lives.
Reflecting on his journey, Wall emphasizes the importance of community college education. His original plan was to go directly to a university after high school until a high school counselor and family friend suggested he start at CCC. “Looking back, I have to say that attending community college first, before transferring to a university was one of my greatest life decisions. The education, the job experience, the life lessons, and the friends I made would likely not have happened had I stuck to my original plan.”
