This certification-related course is designed for the education and training of the Fire Prevention Level II code enforcement official who has the responsibility of inspecting existing buildings, excluding high-rises, in the following occupancy classifications: business, small assembly, large assembly, mercantile, residential, storage, educational, and industrial. Upon completion, course participants will have a better understanding of the NC Fire Prevention Code and will be able to apply the code in the inspection field.

This certification-related course is designed for the education and training of the Fire Prevention Level III code enforcement official who has the responsibility of inspecting all existing buildings, including high-rises. Upon completion, course participants will have a better understanding of the NC Fire Prevention Code and will be able to apply the code in the inspection field.

This course covers fire protection law as referenced in NFPA standard 1. Topics include legal terms, contracts, liability, review of case histories, and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to discuss laws, codes, and ordinances as they relate to fire protection.

This course introduces various types of automatic sprinklers, standpipes, fire alarm systems, and fixed and portable extinguishing systems referenced in NFPA standard 25, including their operation, installation, and maintenance. Topics include wet and dry systems, testing and maintenance, water supply requirements, fire detection and alarm systems, including application, testing, and maintenance of Halon, carbon dioxide, dry chemical, and special extinguishing agents utilized in fixed and portable systems. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of sprinkler and alarm systems, both fixed and portable, including appropriate application, operation, inspection, and maintenance requirements.

This course introduces the basics of emergency first aid treatment. Topics include rescue breathing, CPR, first aid for choking and bleeding, and other first aid procedures. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate skills in providing emergency care for the sick and injured until medical help can be obtained. This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA and ICAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.

This course is designed to investigate and apply the basic concepts and principles of lifetime physical fitness and other health-related factors. Emphasis is placed on wellness through the study of nutrition, weight control, stress management, and consumer facts on exercise and fitness. Upon completion, students should be able to plan a personal, lifelong fitness program based on individual needs, abilities, and interests. This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA and ICAA as a premajor and/or elective course.

This certification-related Fire and Life Safety Education (FLSE) course covers the basics of fire and life safety and is the first of three FLSE levels. Students will be introduced to injuries that occur in North Carolina and programs that are designed to prevent these injuries. Students will also discuss the mission of their organizations and the responsibility of prevention education, to include using correct/current fire & life safety educational messages and the role of the Fire & Life Safety Educator. This class is designed to give firefighters and fire & life safety educators ideas and confidence to teach fire safety to all ages. Students will participate in fire safety lessons and teach a safety lesson plan that they can use at their own fire department. Students will also be introduced to new Community Risk Reduction resources they can obtain at no cost. This class is designed to show a new educator how to keep successful records and reports. Students will review and document various fire and life safety educational programs, describe various formats, prepare written reports, and discuss time management and organizational skills. Information will be presented on how to develop and maintain a work schedule, arrange meetings, presentations, and community events, while reducing scheduling conflicts. Working with local media outlets and distributing fire & life safety materials and messages to the community will be discussed in detail. This is a NC Fire and Rescue Commission certification course approved for offering as of July 1, 2017. This course is consistent with the most current Commission guidelines.

This certification-related Fire and Life Safety Education (FLSE) course is the second of three FLSE levels. Using their local data, students will establish the types of problems occurring in their community and then develop a plan to decrease these injuries or losses through a community risk assessment. To make the class more effective, students should bring fire and injury loss statistics from their local areas. Students will develop lesson plans and learning objectives for a Fire and Life safety program to meet the need in their community. Students will also develop appropriate informational materials, objectives, and instructional materials for a specific audience and topic, along with an evaluation component for an educational program. Students will use program needs, past expenditures and personnel costs to create a budget that meets their current budget guidelines. This is a NC Fire and Rescue Commission certification course approved for offering as of July 1, 2017. This course is consistent with the most current Commission guidelines.

This certification-related Fire and Life Safety Education (FLSE) course is the third of three FLSE levels. Using local demographics, students will identify issues and plan priorities for life safety education programs and will create a marketing plan designed to increase awareness in their community. Educators will also discuss suggestions for working with elected officials to reduce injury, death and property damage. During this class, participants will create a developmentally appropriate training program for their agency and compile education materials to supplement the new program. Participants will identify the training needs for Fire and Life Safety Educators within their organization, based on NFPA 1035, and will discuss methods to track customer satisfaction and success of the program. Participants will discuss methods to recruit, coordinate and train volunteer educators to deliver their program. Using local data, students will establish the types of fire and life safety problems occurring in their community and then develop a budget to use in completing a grant proposal. Students will have the opportunity to write a grant proposal that can be submitted to a Grantor at the end of the class. To make the class more effective, students should bring fire and injury loss statistics from their local areas and ideas for their grant proposal. The goal is for students to complete a grant application that is ready to submit for possible funding. In this course you will learn how to train your forklift operators for safe operation and meet OSHA requirements. The course teaches students how to develop and deliver complete in-house training programs, design exercises for staff evaluations, and instruct non-operators how to work safely around forklifts.

This course introduces the examination of the American educational systems and the teaching profession. Topics include the historical and philosophical influences on education, various perspectives on educational issues, and experiences in birth through grade 12 classrooms. Upon completion, students should be able to reflect on classroom observations, analyze the different educational approaches, including classical/traditional and progressive, and have knowledge of the various roles of educational systems at the federal, state and local level. This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA and ICAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.

This course provides a survey of basic facts and principles of general, organic, and biochemistry. Topics include measurement, molecular structure, nuclear chemistry, solutions, acid-base chemistry, gas laws, and the structure, properties, and reactions of major organic and biological groups. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of fundamental chemical concepts. This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA and ICAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.
